Understanding the Basics of Pinata Crafting
Before you start making your pinata, it’s good to get a handle on the basics.
A classic piñata usually involves layering paper, commonly with newspaper strips and a papier-mâché technique. The real charm of a DIY pinata is in how you make it your own – this means picking a theme that excites you, choosing colors and patterns for the paper, and selecting the right embellishments, like ribbons and stickers. Let’s dive in and start creating something special that will make your event unforgettable!
Materials Required for Making a Pinata
To start your pinata project, you’ll need a few key materials:
- Cardboards: As the base for your pinata.
- Paper strips and adhesive. No paper mache layering is involved.
- Decorative elements: Such as paint, decorative paper, and ribbons.
- A zip tie or piece of metal wire to create a loop for hanging!
- Craft paper and a marker for eyes for other details. You can also use colorful markers/sketches for this.
How to Make a DIY Pinata
Choosing Your Pinata Design: Decide on a themed pinata, character pinata, or a traditional shape. This will guide your cardboard choice and overall design.
For our guide, I have decided to make a Mickey Mouse-themed pinata – a classic!
Begin by tracing a Mickey Mouse on a big piece of cardboard. Here, I’m using simple kitchen utensils to create those perfect circles for the Mickey Mouse ears and face.
Remember that you will need to create two of such stencils. One for the front and one for the back. Once you have created the face on the cardboard, cut it using a scissor.
Now, the next step is to create the depth/side of the face to make this design complete 3-D.
For this purpose, I’m using a 4 to 6-inch strip of cardboard as shown in the image below.
Once you have cut the strip from your regular cardboard, I will strip off one layer of the cardboard (as shown) to provide flexibility to the strip.
Bend and use this cardboard strip to use as a flap for the siding of your design.
Simply fold it from the corners/edges, and then staple it to both the front and back sides of the face of our character. This should create a hollow figure for our pinata design.
Ta-Da! The basic design for our pinata is almost done.

Now, the next step is to get creative.
We will begin covering it with colored paper. Using a simple hand brush and regular glue, attach the blue colored paper to the entire pinata design as shown below.
Once your pinata design has been covered with blue paper, we will create ruffles from the side view of our character by creating small slits in our craft-colored paper and then attaching them to our pinata using glue.
This should take you a little bit, however once done, you can proceed onto the next step.
Next, we will create the face and ears of the Mickey Mouse pinata using pink-colored paper. You can also use crepe paper if you don’t want to use regular pink craft paper or prefer a different texture.
Using glue attach the ears and face to the front and back of our pinata character design.
The next step is to add some more ruffles to the corners of the face, ears, and side.
This should give the face a complete look and make it real.
Once done, you can create eyes nose, and mouth on a regular piece of paper. Fill some colors in them, and after cutting them using a scissor, attach them to your homemade pinata as shown below.
Also, poke your wire, rope, or zip tie through the forehead. This will be the loop from which you hang it up. During the crafting process, be careful of the sharp ends of the wire.
Almost there! Phew!
Clean up and then fill up the pinata with your favorite candies, mini toys, etc.
Bonus tip: If you’re making this during summers, make sure that you wait till the sun is down before you put the chocolates or other candies in it to prevent them from melting.
Voila! There you have it.
You just saved yourself a nifty $50-60 while adding a lot of personal touches to your very own homemade pinata.
