As many of you already know, we added two adorable new members to our family this year.
Which means we were in need of two adorable new stockings. So I made some out of thrift store sweaters!
I laid the sweater inside out on the table.
And put a stocking I already had on top.
I traced the shape and pinned it so that the front and back of the sweater wouldn't shift while sewing.
And then I machine stitched on the lines before cutting so that the sweater won't unravel. Then I cut around the stitches.
And turned the stocking right side out.
And then, just like everything else a mommy of twins does, I did the same thing all over again!
I hung the stockings on an extra baluster I found on the basement. I just drilled some holes in it and hung it on some removable adhesive command hooks so that I can remove the whole thing after Christmas!
I can hardly wait to fill them with small gifts on Christmas Eve!

Brilliant! If only I knew how to use a sewing machine :) I just bought a personalized pink stocking for my baby. I'm using 3M Command products to hang them though, as well as my Christmas lights inside the window - LOVE those products!

I see that they're on there, of course, but that part is not in the tutorial. I don't know very much about sewing at all (last time I made something was in Home Ec 25 years ago!). ReplyDeleteI've been waiting to do this for weeks and went out on monday and bought like 10 sweaters and a couple men's flannels from my local thrift store to make stocking for a family who just moved to town and they lost all of their Christmas items so i thought this would be perfect. something that can be individualized for each of the 7 kids. im going to try getting 2 stocking out of every sweater by using the already sewn edges and using the arm pit curve for the curve in the stocking. have you tried this? anyone tried this?

ReplyDeleteI found this through pinterest, and it is truly a jackpot. I love the sentimentality, among other things, of Christmas, and I wanted really beautiful stockings. But all the ones I found were ridiculously priced. I have touched a sewing machine only a few times, and each of those has been far from willing. But this was soooo easy. And I love the result! Thanks for your inspirational idea!

ReplyDeleteIve been searching for a stocking pattern for some time now. I'm pretty limited on my sewing abilities, but when I saw these I fell in love! I could not WAIT for our local thrift store to open this morning. I bought one sweater and had that puppy d.o.n.e in less than 10 minutes! I went searching through my clothes and found a sweater that buttons. LOVE IT! Thank you so much for a great tutorial.
