In pursuit of a simple, fabulous, imperfect life at home.

How to Make a Fabulous Apple Pie {and some pretty great memories too!}

Use three different types of apples. The variety in texture and the differing degrees of sweetness and tartness all mix together to make a delicious pie with no two bites exactly the same.

Use real butter in the crust.  You won't regret it

Let little hands crimp the edges...

And make a mess.

If you've got a two year old handy, let him sprinkle the crumb topping.

Bake and share with the people you love.

{The Recipe}

The Crust:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/4 tsp salt
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 egg
  • 1 Tbsp cold water
  • 1/2 Tbsp white vinegar
Combine flour and salt. Using a pastry cutter, cut the butter into the flour until the mixture resembles course crumbs.  Mix together egg, water and vinegar, and stir into dry ingredients until a soft dough ball is formed.

Wrap dough in a clean damp tea towel and place in the fridge while you prepare the filling and crumb topping.

To make the filling, stir together:
  • about 12 apples, peeled and sliced
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/3 cup flour
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • a dash of salt
For the Crumb Topping, crumble together with a pastry cutter or your fingers:
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

To assemble pie:
  1. Preheat oven to 400F.
  2. Roll out your pie dough and place in pie plate.
  3. Dump filling in pie crust.  Cover with crumb topping.
  4. Put pie on a cookie sheet (to catch any drips) and cover with tin foil (to keep from browning too quickly).
  5. Bake for 50 minutes, remove tin foil and bake for 10 minutes more.
  6. Let pie cool a little.  Serve with good vanilla ice cream.  Enjoy!

  8. I love your blogs! I'm a new stay at home mom and homemaker and have been so inspired by you! I read your blogs on my iPhone and would love to pin things to pinterest. Any chance you can add a button on your blog to make pinning easier? As far as I know it's the only way to pin things from the iPhone that I've found. I'd love to give your site the publicity and save your great ideas like this apple pie!

  9. I know this post has zero to do with cleaning products, but I follow your blog and thought this would be the quickest way to get a response ;) what do you use for the dishwasher?

We have run out of automatic dishwasher detergent AND liquid dish soap and I was hoping to select natural options this time around. Thoughts? Suggestions?

    1. Hi Danielle! There are several good brands on the market for these things, and I don't have one I always stick to. I use goodguide.com to figure out which products are safe enough for our family. Seventh Generation, Method, and Mrs Meyers products tend to score pretty well.

    1. Hi sally! I just measured my pie plate for you, and it's 10.5 inches...but it is really shallow. I like my apple pies pretty heaping, so it does make a fair bit. enjoy!

    2. Too late, Kelly! I have one very tall 9" deep dish pie baking, short one apple and with extra topping left over. My eight year old daughter and I are thanking you from the bottoms of our hearts (and bellies)!

  15. I used this ideas with my 82 year old legally blind dad! Today... we made pie... and, yes, I let him help cut apples. He had a blast. (We've already made pickles three times in the past few weeks...)

My pie is in the oven... my mom will bake their mini one tonight! Thanks for the recipe and great idea.
