Use real butter in the crust. You won't regret it
Let little hands crimp the edges...
And make a mess.
If you've got a two year old handy, let him sprinkle the crumb topping.
Bake and share with the people you love.
{The Recipe}
The Crust:
- 1 cup flour
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbsp cold water
- 1/2 Tbsp white vinegar
Wrap dough in a clean damp tea towel and place in the fridge while you prepare the filling and crumb topping.
To make the filling, stir together:
- about 12 apples, peeled and sliced
- 1 cup white sugar
- 1/3 cup flour
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- a dash of salt
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup butter
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
To assemble pie:
- Preheat oven to 400F.
- Roll out your pie dough and place in pie plate.
- Dump filling in pie crust. Cover with crumb topping.
- Put pie on a cookie sheet (to catch any drips) and cover with tin foil (to keep from browning too quickly).
- Bake for 50 minutes, remove tin foil and bake for 10 minutes more.
- Let pie cool a little. Serve with good vanilla ice cream. Enjoy!

DeleteI'd say that somewhere around 2 years old kids start being able to sort of help. You'll know which tasks he is capable of and when. :D

Hi Danielle! There are several good brands on the market for these things, and I don't have one I always stick to. I use goodguide.com to figure out which products are safe enough for our family. Seventh Generation, Method, and Mrs Meyers products tend to score pretty well.

Hi sally! I just measured my pie plate for you, and it's 10.5 inches...but it is really shallow. I like my apple pies pretty heaping, so it does make a fair bit. enjoy!

ReplyDeleteI used this ideas with my 82 year old legally blind dad! Today... we made pie... and, yes, I let him help cut apples. He had a blast. (We've already made pickles three times in the past few weeks...)
