Cloth diapering is a great choice. But choosing cloth diapers is overwhelming, isn't it? There are so many options out there. When my husband and I recently decided to make the switch to cloth we contacted some of the cloth diaper companies we've heard great things about and asked for a chance to review their products on our twin baby girls. Today I am sharing my thoughts on five popular cloth diaper brands.
1.Apple Cheeks Envelope Cover with Bamboo Insert
- I love the trim fit. These diapers don't make my babies waddle like cowboys at all!
- The colours are super cute.
- The large prefold-style bamboo insert is a great combination of absorbency and quick drying
- The waterproof layer isn't quite waterproof enough for my heavy night-time wetters. I need to use a different diaper or add a diaper cover at night time.
2. Bummis Easy Fit Diaper
The Pros:
- The easy fold-out liner means that the diapers dry very quickly but also that there is no matching to be done when the diaper comes off the laundry line. I like that.
- It comes in some really cute fairy-tale inspired prints. I want one of each!
- The minky liner is so soft that my husband commented that I should start making him underwear out of this stuff. I'm pretty sure he was kidding...
- I wish I hadn't made the rookie mistake of choosing the hook and loop. Next time I would pick the snap-up version; they are more difficult for wanna-be-naked babies to undo and they are easier for laundering.
3. Thirsties Duo All-In-One
The Pros:
- Super absorbent
- Easy. No stuffing required, the diaper comes off the line ready to use.
- This diaper took the longest to dry of all the diapers we tried.
4. Fuzzi Bunz One-Size Elite
The Pros:
- Was definitely the fastest drying of all of the diapers we tried.
- Adjustable elastic in the gussets and at the back to make for a snugger fit.
- It comes with 2 minky inserts
- My apparently nudist babies haven't figured out how to get out of this one yet. It fits too snug for them to squirm out of and they can't undo the snaps.
- Not always absorbent enough for night-time use, even with the extra insert.
5. Charlie Banana One Size Diaper
The Pros:
- It comes with two very absorbent inserts.
- This is the only diaper we've tried that can consistently hold up to a full night-times worth of pee (with the second insert in it ).
- Considering how absorbent it is, it dries relatively quickly.
- I just kinda love the name of the company. Does that make me shallow?
- Even with just the one insert, it is a very bulky diaper. Which can be difficult when trying to dress baby in super cute snug fitting jeans.

I've always been very intimidated to try cloth diapers, but you make it much less so! I'd love to give them a try for my darling 10 month old baby girl :) My e-mail is jessica_mcallister22ATyahooDOMCOM. Keep up the good work! Love the blog.

ReplyDeleteI just love babies with cute, big cloth diapered bottoms! Always looking to add to the stash, especially cute prints like those!
ReplyDeleteI would love to try it!
ReplyDeletetrippeer11@yahoo.com
I cloth diaper, but don't have quite enough of a stash to make it "convenient". I've never tried either of the diapers listed, as they've been out of my price range. I'd LOVE to try them, because I've heard great things about both diapers. I share my cloth-diapering success with friends and would love to be able to give them personal experience about these two diapers! Thanks!
ReplyDeletecloth diapers have certainly changed since I tried using them for my kids!
ReplyDeleteI use some thirsties covers with prefolds and love them...I have not ever tried Charlie Banana, but they have the cutest little prints and seem pretty simple. That thirsties duo is adorable, and I agree with you, would be great to leave with a caregiver or take when we go to the church nursery!

I have a niece that is having a baby soon and am hoping to get her a stash for her as a baby shower gift. These would be great for her to try herself. I also want to know what to get when I have a grandbaby one day myself. My daughter and I have already talked about her wanting to use cloth, so this would be great for one to try out so I can know what to use for the other. Thank you for the tip on hoop and loops, was debating on that one myself. Also, thank you for the opportunity. goochville at live dot com (use the symbols for at and dot of course ;)
ReplyDeleteInto cloth diapering with my second, I changed my stash to the Kawaii brand diapers, canadian company but the diapers are made in china, they are the least expensive of all the ones I have tried, and have AMAZING cute designs. And now because I have so many its really convenient, just don't leave the diapers in the pail for 4 days.... yuck
ReplyDeleteI have debating on switching to cloth diapers, this would be a great way for me to try them out. Thank you for the give away!!!

ReplyDeleteThis was such a timely post for me! I've been wading through all the options for cloth diapering for Baby #2, due in few months. So overwhelming! My mom couldn't even help because when my brother and I were babies there were diapers, pins, and plastic pants, and that was it :D Thank you for this review--it's made narrowing down some choices much simpler! My email is sekallenbach@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteThanks for all the info, I may switch to cloth when I have the money. Thanks Kunti.estrella@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe love our cloth diapers! We tried to start when we got home, but found that the covers we had rubbed her umbilical stump so we waited until it fell off and haven't looked back since (that was six months ago)! To start off we used Diaper Rite small flats with bummis super brite covers and Thirsties duo wraps. We also had 24 Diaper Rite prefolds, but just never really fell in love with them. I love flats for itty bitties that don't wiggle too much. Around three months ago we invested in a stash of 26 (two to test then we invested in 24...half snaps half velcro) BumGenius 4.0 pockets. I didn't like the microfiber inserts for diapering so they became my counter/mess rags when we switched our kitchen over to all cloth. The newborn prefolds came back out and they were PERFECTLY on the smallest rise setting of the 4.0s. Since my daughter is our first we will continue to invest in prefolds to stuff them with for the middle and largest rise settings. All of the diapers will be passed down to future children. Our daughter is 6 months old (tomorrow) and we wash every other day with our stash of 26. I still have 6 flats and two covers out in case I don't get laundry done on time, but have only had to use those once. The rest are packed away for the next kiddo. :) A lot of moms get into cloth diapering and have to try the next best thing all the time, but I love that I've found what works for us and will be done once we have the other two prefold sizes. :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for the info this will be really helpful! I have seriously been considering switching my 14 month old and any future babes to cloth diapers. We go through so many disposables I feel so guilty every time we fill up a garbage bag with them. Here's my email haileymacd@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteWe have been using Fuzzi Bunz for all of our four kids, and love them! We have recommended them to many of our friends and family. I used the perfect sized diapers, smalls and mediums, for the first three kids. I needed to replace a few for the fourth and decided to try the one size, which are nice and have adjusted much better than I expected. I do use two inserts for naps and bedtime. Our youngest, and first boy, is the first to be able to undo the snaps and take his diaper off. Hopefully yours won't figure that out! hopes@columbus.rr.com
ReplyDeleteI've been trying to figure out a good night time solution with C. Sounds like Charlie Banana's might do the trick. Hmmm...
ReplyDeleteenter me! my friend just started cloth diapering and would love these. dara00@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteJust looking into cloth diapering. I really want to switch in hopes we can potty train a little earlier. Love the blog, tried the lentil and rice burritos and they were tasty!
ReplyDeleteThis is a great post. I'm allergic to regular diapers, so more info on cloth diapers is wonderful-thank you!~Karene515@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteI love this post!! My husband & I are expecting and have been wanting to try cloth diapering once the babe gets here but didn't know where to start. Winning this would be awesome!
ReplyDeleteWhitetrashfairytale@gmail.com
I am cloth diapering my second child currently and I use Kawaii diapers and LOVE them. They are also made in Canada :) and are pocket diapers and I find they leak less than disposables. My only complaint is that they don't hold up very well for night time diapering, they do leak if I try to use them for a 12+ hour period of time. They were also SUPER cheap for cloth! :)

Yay! You will love cloth, it is amazing! We have been using it on our son since he was born, so 7 months. I'd love to try Thirsties (never used them before) and would love a CB, I just ordered 3 to try from my local CD retailer.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the review and giveaway! jo (dot) geuer (at) gmail (dot) com
I cloth diaper and love trying new brands and types! Haven't tried either of these yet, so here's to hoping I win!
ReplyDeleteWe started with cloth when we were given 3 months of a diaper service for a baby gift. After the 3 months expired, we got lazy and went to disposable. Last night we spent about $100 on disposable and realized we really need to switch back, to both save major $ and for environmental reasons. Thanks for your helpful reviews! I love both of your blogs!

I am 25 weeks pregnant with my first baby! Considering cloth diapering, but don't really know all the ins and outs of how it works... I mean, what do you do with a poopy diaper?!? Wash it with a water hose in your yard? I live in the country, so if that's the case, no big deal for me. :)

Melody,
DeleteI love how gung-ho you are about cloth diapers:) There are actually sprayers that you can attach to your toilet to spray the poo into the tiolet instead. I'm sure you could just use a hose too, though. It would work about the same, I'm sure!
I blog about cloth diapering over at my website, and I'm actually working through a series about the basics of cloth diapers. If you're at all interested, it's over at www.thelittlemother.com.
Good luck with your pregnancy!

Thanks for all the pros and cons. We cloth diaper our son in BumGenius 4.0 but even with changing he again at 10pm, he still pees through EVERY night! I would love a chance to try out the Charlie Banana to see if that one can hold all his pee!

ooo! I would LOVE one of these for Baby Girly at night time! And looking ahead, I think it would be easier to potty train her if we make the switch to cloth diapers when we start potty training her (so she thinks she is wearing big girl panties BUT I don't have to worry about Pee EVERYWHERE!
ReplyDeleteMy sister is a new mom and trying out cloth for her first time. I'd love to gift her one of these.

I just got three of the new Bummies Tots Bots ones and am in LOVE.
ReplyDeleteYou would also really like the new BabyKicks Premiums. Side snaps are the most streaker proof and the hemp insert is so very very absorbent.
The Thristies AIOs can cause trouble when unstapped in boys because of where the absorbent part falls. The velcro will also unstick so be prepared to convert to snaps at some point.
I like Thristies and CB on FB.
Never tried either and would love to try them out! I have tried Bum Genius, and satisfied. I have a boy who loves to undo the velcro, now that he is 8 months, though! Should have done the snaps, the few I have like that are the ones that stay on!
ReplyDeletecountrygirlbrooks@hotmail.com
We love cloth diapers! Some of our Mother-Ease are wearing out and we could use more diapers. My two year old just wears diapers at night, but he pees a lot. I would love to find diapers that hold up at night. Our six week old goes through so many diapers. My favourite for him are the size small from Rearz that I bought on well.ca They have snap down fronts for the umbilical cord. We pair these with econobum, Blueberry Coverall or Rumparooz covers.
ReplyDeleteMe me me! Always love to try a new diaper and haven't tried either of these! :) titiausher@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteWhat about MotherEase!! They're practically made in your backyard!! If my name comes up, pick someone else. I'm almost done with diapers and just sold my MotherEase stash!! YAY!!!

ReplyDeleteThese look way easier that the old fashioned cloth diapers. Hope I get to try them. leafprints@juno.com
ReplyDeleteCloth us so simple too! I think youre going to love it! We use bummis cotton pre folds and rumparoo's covers, which I have to say is totally my favorite solution! Nit to mention the most thrifty way to cloth diaper. would love to try the charlie banana for the night time though.
ReplyDeleteA as side note when your newest princess arrives if you want to keep your diapers in good shape you will want about a weeks worth of disposables for that meconium. Hard stuff to get out!
Another note fit people contemplating cloth. . My girls get awful rashes from disposables, and I mean awful. . But with cloth do long as I'm diligent about their changes they have powder soft bottoms always! A nicer perk I think!
ReplyDeleteWe love cloth! sarahsnail86@yahoo.com

Wow your babies bottoms are soooo cute! Please could you tell us how you wash them and how many to buy for one baby ? I'm expecting number 3 in April 2013 - tried it with number 2 but didn't quite manage it!!
ReplyDeleteCool article!!
I know you're not asking me, but we wash ours with like a tablespoon of regular detergent on a cold cycle (our washer doesn't have the right temperature cycle that the instructions say). The instructions also say to use a special detergent, but we haven't had a problem with Sunlight. I hang them in the sun as much as possible to bleach them.
DeleteI have 15 diapers and do a load every day or two. Our baby is three months.
Great giveaway. My diapers are on their 4th girl (my second, bought them used) and are in need of repair or replacement and I've been looking at some of these! Love your review

Yes, would love them, we just started cloth diapering our baby.
ReplyDeleteGreat giveaway! I have loved BumGenius but am ready to try some other brands, especially ones that fit a little slimmer. And what better time to do it than with a new baby due in a few months? :-)
ReplyDeleteAhahaha! I too am plagued with nudist baby. I actually used disposables for most of her babyhood, now that she is nearing two, I am using cloth diapers to potty train her. Much more willing to pee on the pot if the alternative is a soggy diaper :D
ReplyDeleteNot sure if this is open internationally or not, but if it is, I would love to enter! Especially for the Charlie Banana one - as you say, awesome name, and something that can last all night would be wonderful. We use Bambooty nappies, which we absolutely love - they sound pretty similar to the FuzziBunz ones, except they're bamboo fabric - but their nighttime one is not quite enough some nights!

ReplyDeleteI tried cloth diapering with my son and then with my daughter for a short time. We always had issues at night with my son. He always leaked through so we ended up switching back to disposable. ReplyDeleteThis post is so timely for us! We just switched to cloth diapers full time yesterday when the 12 FuzziBunz Elite we ordered came in the mail. I love them as a trim daytime diaper, and use KaWaii's at night. Your reviews made me interested to try the Charlie Banana's though.

Yay, for clothing diapering! We use Bum Genius cloth diapers and have been so pleased. The same diapers used on our 3 year old, are now being used on our 1.5 year old. They are still in awesome shape! Not only are cloth diapers good for the environment (no waste), are filled with of chemicals, they're so convenient (no midnight runs to the store if one runs out), they take up less space in your home. We have so tried and promote them to friends and family - no one seems to 'get it'. Many negative reactions. People, what kind of environment are leaving for your kids??? I hope more people catch on. It's great to see so many comments! Thanks a lot for writing this article.
ReplyDeleteI love cloth diapers! Tailsmonita@gmail.com
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Perfect timing! I have been planning to start cloth diapering as soon as we move into our new house and have our own washer and dryer. I haven't gotten any yet, since I can't decide what kind to try first! Thanks for the helpful reviews. bbbowers@live.com
ReplyDeleteOur two year old has been in Gdiapers since he was about three months old. We love Gdiapers but they work best as a daytime diaper. So I loved your reviews and really would like to try the Charlie Banana's! I can't resist an awesome giveaway :)
ReplyDeleteI have been pretty interested in cloth diapering ever since I got linked in a gift exchange with a woman doing cloth diapering. I have a 5 week old little girl and I am thinking that I may try to build up a stash of diapers for the next one.
ReplyDeleteI am a mom of 4 little ones and have debated about and trialed some cloth diapering over time, but never made the full switch. With only one currently in diapers I am seriously considering it again and would love to try out a new kind of diaper! Thanks for the reviews! the_foges@yahoo.com
ReplyDeleteI just started cloth diapering our newborn in July and I love it! I wish I had started with our daughter. We where blessed with about a days worth of BG 4.0s and they are fantastic. We also have Thirtsties covers and flats. I really like the covers. He's growing so fast we are about to have to move up to size 2. I am thinking we might spring for a few AIOs. I really hope cloth diapering is as much as a blessing for your family as for ours. It does save money and I really think it helps teach my daughter as she helps mommy hang up laundry to embrace the concept that a little extra work can be a joy if its for the good of our family.

ReplyDeleteYour kids are adorable! I love a baby in a cloth diaper. I have been using prefolds with the Thirsties Duo Wrap. Although, I also got the hook and loop and it needs to be replaced. We're expecting again and getting a free one to try before committing to it would be great! Thanks for the giveaway! Email: angelaevenson(at)gmail(dot)com.

I think I've read your whole blog since I found it last week! Keep doing what you're doing lady, I think you're great! I've already tried some of your ideas. Anyway can you enter me? I almost went cloth but I chickened out because everyone thought I was nuts. I tried telling people the cloth ones today aren't like they used to be but they still thought I was crazy. I really want to try one on my six month old. Brijn2005 at Yahoo dot com. Thanks for the giveaway!

I am so glad my daughter wants to use cloth diapers; this is her first child and my first grand child. I would love for her to have some different brands to try out before making the investment. Cloth diapers look like they are so much better than they were 22 years ago. Pins were always trying.
ReplyDeletecoffeycupp@gmail.com
I have been cloth diapering off and on for about 4 1/2 years. It is so fun to try out different brands and styles! I have actually never tried the diapers that you have in the giveaway. I hope I win so I can give them a try! :-)
