{Recipe} Homemade Wheat-Flour Tortillas

I'm not a kitchen Martyr.  I don't spend an eternity labouring in a hot kitchen to make something just to be able to say I made it myself. Not more than once, anyways.

But I promise that homemade tortillas are worth it.
A) Because they have a way better texture than those gummy stick-to-the-roof-of-your-mouth store-bought tortillas.   .
B) Because they are way way cheaper.  Where I live a pack of ten wheat-flour tortillas goes for about 3 dollars.  In my books, that is way too much to spend on something that is mostly flour and water.
C) Homemade tortillas have four ingredients, and none of them are weird preservative things you can't pronounce.
and D) By my calculations they don't really take much time at all because I have to stand at the stove to cook whatever filling I'm making for the tortillas, I may as well be cooking tortillas while I'm there!
This recipe makes six small-ish tortillas. I normally double it for our family.

Into a food processor, measure 1 1/2 cups flour, 1/2 tsp salt and 2 Tbsp of butter.

Pulse until the butter is worked into the flour and the mixture resembles fine crumbs.

With the food processor running, add 1/2 cup of warm water.  Process until it look like this:

The dough should easily hold together into six little balls, like this:

Turn a pan, cast iron if you have it, on to medium to get good and hot.  Roll out your tortillas so that they are about 7 inches wide. I don't worry too much about making them perfectly round.

Cook each tortilla for one to two minutes per side.  They will begin to bubble a little like this:

And when you flip the tortilla it should have some beautiful golden brown spots.

Keep them warm under a clean dish towel or serviette until you are ready to serve.  They are best and most pliable if eaten fresh.

Serve with Lentil and Brown Rice Tacos or homemade fajitas or any yummy topping that suits your fancy.  Enjoy!

  1. Thank you!! With 5 kids (3 of them teens, and apparently teen girls can pack it away just like teen boys!) they can fly through those crazy expensive bags of store bought tortillas in no time. These look so good!
I can't wait to try this recipe!

  5. I've found several really easy recipes of tortillas and it's absolutely something we want to try. We stoked up on store-bought tortillas a couple weeks ago for a big Mexican dinner that never happened, so once that's gone, I'm going to try to make our own. I had the same thought as you had - why am I pay $3 for something made of flour and water?

    1. Plus, we eat tacos every Tuesday (Taco Tuesday!), so go through plenty of taco shells!

  6. yes they are super easy to make and cheap, in India they are called chapati, and are made of whole wheat flour, but are cooked almost the same and are a staple in the traditional diet. And I always hated the store bought tortilla, they are gummy, often taste stale, and because they are imported in my neck of the wood cost a humongous amout of money for what you pointed is just flour and water.

  7. We have been making our own tortillas for a few years now too. It started one night when my husband wanted tacos. We did not have tortillas in the house and could not go to the store. He googled a recipe, and well, we have not looked back since! They taste so much better, as you pointed out. I do not miss the gummy yucky store bought stuff! They really are quite easy to make. My recipe makes about 12-14 tortillas, and sometimes I double that and freeze the rest or fry them up and sprinkle cinnamon sugar on them for dessert. Yum!!!!

  8. These look sooooo amazing. I haven't made my own tortillas yet, but I seem to keep stumbling upon recipes for them.

I am totally going to try to make these this weekend!

    Thanks for sharing!

  10. My moms side of the family's Mexican so she use to make homemade tortillas all the time. We would eat them with eggs, potatoes with beans for breakfast. We would also just eat them with butter. I need to learn how to make them for myself.

  13. Looks good and something I want to try. Can I double it or do I need to make it in 2 separate batches? (Just wondering if double the amount still mixes up properly).

  14. Mmmmm, you've just inspired a taco night at our house. We use bacon drippings instead of butter when we make them.

I just found your blogs a few weeks ago and I love them

  15. My food processor is very small (3 cups), so I am wondering if this recipe is possible to make by hand?

  16. Just tried it! The kids loved rolling out their own tortillas. I was able to easily sub-out the butter for our allergy free Earth Balance 'butter'. They turned out great. Much more cost effective. I also have a daughter on a fiber regiment, and could just sub out a little flour for our necessary fiber. I have a TINY food processor and managed fine. Just made my two batches separately. Thanks for sharing this great recipe!

  17. @ Lisa

Yes, you can make them by hand. I don't have a food processor and make them often. And it really doesn't take any more time.

  19. I just tried these tonight. At first, when I was rolling them out the dough kept springing back...it wasn't working. So I abandoned them to work on cooking the fajita filling and after leaving them a minute it work great. They were SO good! I did your fajita seasoning too...it was awesome. Making bread products used to scare me but since reading your blog I've made your pitas, tortillas and rolls (not your recipe, but by then I'd worked up some courage!) Oh, and did the chicken stock. SO good! It's great to have a source I trust! And I love the pics. Thanks!

  20. We also make our own. I bought an ChefPro electric tortilla maker that eliminates rolling, and also cooks them as well. Best kitchen appliance ever!!

  21. Thanks so much for sharing all of your wonderful recipes and tutorials. I tried making these tonight with a 2:1 ratio of whole wheat to white flour, and while I thought they were delicious, my husband said they had "a taste" (and my kids didn't care for them either). So maybe using ww flour isn't quite as good as all white. I do have a question, though. I don't have cast iron so I was cooking on a regular stainless steel pan and after the first few the flour burned and caused a very smokey kitchen. Am I doing something wrong? I needed to use quite a bit of flour to roll mine out without sticking, so maybe I should use less water in the recipe? Or do I need to dust them off better before putting them on the pan? I had it on medium heat, and tortillas themselves didn't burn, just the flour "dust" that would come off the tortillas in the pan. I'm looking forward to trying them out again!

  26. I know I'm very late to this post, but I was wondering if it would work to make them with a mixer, or in the blender? I don't have a food prcesser. Thanks!

    1. I expect that a stand mixer would work better than a blender. Try it, and let us know!? :)
