In our house, my husband is the maker of the hot cocoa. I've never done it. Not even once. I'm sure I could do it, it's simple enough. But I enjoy it when my sweet husband takes to the kitchen to make us hot chocolate and popcorn for our cozy cuddle-under-a-blankie movie nights.
So today I'm going to let him show you how to make your own easy and delicious homemade hot chocolate. I will just play the role of fearless reporter; taking pictures, typing out the recipe, and savouring the delicious consequences of this blog post!
In a medium sized pot over high heat, heat to boiling
- 3 Tbsp of water
- 6 Tbsp of sugar
- 3 Tbsp of cocoa
- a dash of salt
- a splash of vanilla extract
Add
- 1 3/4 cups of milk
Heat, stirring regularly, until very hot but not boiling.
Split 1/4 cup of table cream between two mugs.
Pour chocolate mixture over cream and enjoy.

Love that top photo! The salty popcorn with sweet homemade hot chocolate! I can't think of anything better for an evening snack with my honey! Thanks for sharing your family recipe.
ReplyDeleteI have to try this way! I've always done it with chocolate chips meant for it, dissolved directly on the milk, but yours sounds like it is more versatile.
ReplyDeleteHow easy is that! Mmmm I love warming up to hot chocolate :)

What is the American equivalent of "table cream?" Half and half? Heavy cream. I make scratch hot chocolate, but I have never added cream. It sounds delicious!
ReplyDeleteTable cream is standard coffee cream around here. It's 18% cream. I'm sure you could use half and half instead. :)
DeleteCan't wait to try this out. And the shot of the carton of cream from Reid's brings back great memories of going to Reid's dairy in Belleville when I go visit my mom's side of the family. We don't have Reid's out west. Thanks for the warm fuzzies on a very blustery Alberta morning.
ReplyDeleteI've never thought about pouring over cream. Oh my! Now I am all excited and must go get the cream to make some tonight. A million thanks to your sweet husband for sharing this sweet drink.
ReplyDeleteYUM! I have a good home-made instant recipe, but this looks so much better! Thank you for sharing :) Do you watch movies on your computer or do you have a TV that is for movie-watching only? Have a good week!

Hi Sandy! We watch movies on our computer. :)
DeleteJust made this for my son after school today. We love it! I made a mocha with mine and whipped the cream and poured on top for his. Added mini marshmallows to both :-)
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness. I'm in bed ready to go to sleep but now I REALLY want some hot chocolate. This looks SOOOO good.
ReplyDeleteWaaaait a moment...I thought you didn't own a wisk anymore! ;-) Nothin' like everyone knowing your business, ha!
ReplyDeleteYou're right!...When we were purging the kitchen we kept one but then I broke it so we used a fork for a while. And then we found one at a thrift store. So now we have one again. :)
DeleteWhat kind of cocoa? Baking cocoa?
ReplyDeleteAnyway we can get a printable version? Or did I miss a link somewhere?
ReplyDeleteKelly, I LOVE your dinner wear pattern. Would you mind sharing what the pattern is and where it's from?
ReplyDeleteSorry Elizabeth....all I know is that I bought them at Canadian Tire (A Canadian hardware type store that sells housewares as well) several years ago.
DeleteI just made this for my boys minus the cream and some of the sugar, and I got rave reviews. Thanks!
