In pursuit of a simple, fabulous, imperfect life at home.

{OrganizedHome} Day 19: DIY File Basket

Not willing to sacrifice space in my small home for a filing cabinet, I created a pretty little file basket.

I stained some dowels with some stain I had in the basement and used craft wire to attach them to the basket.

I use hanging files for main sections: bills, bank statements, tax info, insurance policies, personal, kids records, blog and miscellaneous.  I created subsections inside the hanging folders using regular file folders (the non hanging type).

Tip:  Create a sub section for every type of bill and statement you receive. Each time you file your records, put them to the back of the appropriate subsection. At the end of the year, pull out each of your bills and statements separated by type AND in order, ready to pop a paper clip on them and store away if necessary.

I added a simple card stock label.  The basket sits on my bookshelf, easily accessible and big enough for a years worth of files.

  4. @Beth: Last night my husband asked me if I had a file for peanut butter sandwiches...lol. But my kids are pretty good at knowing what is off limits and what isn't. Hopefully they won't file any peanut butter sandwiches....

  5. How crafty!! I just recently bought a far less pretty crate version. Guess I should have waited. Thankfully, ours is stored at the bottom of the attic stairwell (we have a cape cod with only the first part of the upstairs finished, so most of out "living" is on the main floor), so no one sees it...but I do like pretty things!!!

  6. What a great idea! I just keep mine behind a closed cupboard door so not only do I not have to see it, I don't have to think about it unless I'm ready to pay bills and such.

  9. I love your system and that it all fits into such a small and pretty basket. When I read this yesterday I was all inspired to tackle our filing cabinet, but a, in the process of sorting and packing up half our house for upcoming renovations. So what a great surprise when I came home yesterday and found my husband (who didn't know anything of my thoughts) spontaneously decluttering the filing cabinet! Woohoo! Now hopefully we can keep it all much smaller ...

  12. Love this idea! I have a home office and want a functional and pretty new file system. What size basket are you using and where did you find the basket?
    Thank you!

  13. I LOVE this idea! I've been looking for some kind of cute hanging file solution for a while, but all I can ever find is expandable folders.

I thought about making it myself, but I had no idea how! I will definitely be looking for some supplies to do this.

I also really like the idea of sub-sections within the folders - at the moment our big filing cabinet (which is not even half full) has a lot of almost empty files with things that could go together but need to be separated somehow.

Love your outside-the-square thinking on this one!

  14. very nice. I have an ugly gray box that my MIL gave us. That is NOT one of the things I will have to get over throwing out.

  15. I love the use of dowels here. It allows you to turn any neat box into organizing central.

  17. Ok, I guess I am a PAPER JUNKIE!!! After my mom was audited a few years back I am so afraid to throw away any receipts!! And My 5 drawer Filing cabinet is full! I have all bills, bank statements, medical info, Kids school stuff, Animal info, etc... going back three years. It took ONE whole Day just to go through each file and get rid of old stuff! I felt better about it BUT I felt guilty for getting rid of it????? I did fix a similar basket like you have for my NEW mail that is coming in. I separate it into the files and after paying that bill or whatever it is I will file into BIG filing cabinet!!

  19. I love this idea and am so excited to make it! I looked around for some baskets today and was unable to find any that would be tall enough. Most that I found were only 8" in height and I believe the folders are just over 9". Where did you get your basket from? Thanks!

    1. I believe I got the basket at Homesense, which is the Canadian version of HomeGoods.

  20. What size is the basket? I don't really see how the dowels are attached..it looks like the wire is wrapped around the dowel and it is just sitting on the basket. More details please, I'm a craft dummy. :)
